The Story so far ….

In November 2011, two mums met with Whitsunday Regional Council with an idea of building an adventure playground.  After a few short meetings it was decided that we would form a community group and along with council would work on building a real adventure playground for the kids of the Whitsundays.   In February 2012 Parent Action Group was formed with only 3 members. We received a community purpose sanction to fundraise and set about fundraising and bringing awareness for the project.

The playground was named  ‘Logan’s Adventure Playground’  not just after a little boy who lost his  battle with cancer but after the charity in his name which brought a community together to raise so much money to support  families in need.  This playground will be a symbol of what a community can achieve when it pulls together.

Our proposal involves so much more than a slide and a swing. We aim to build a playground that will fit into the natural environment of the land with space for children to run, explore and use their imaginations.    If you take a look at the playground plans you will see this project will benefit the whole community by bringing families together, it will be a place the whole community can enjoy.

A playground of this type is something that engages children and keeps them away from todays distractions of sitting in front of an electronic screen.  We want to promote healthy lifestyle and playing outside.    Much research shows that children  that play outside and use their imaginations are better learners and communicators and this is something that benefits the whole community.

Logan’s Adventure Playground will be a community built playground, by the funds we need to raise and by the blood, sweat and tears of literally building it together. Community-built projects inspire everyone who participates with a sense of ownership, so much so, that these projects become a focus of community life. People describe them as the experience of a lifetime. Families who helped build the playground will return for picnics and bring out-of-town guests to share what the community accomplished together.

Although the playground will be located on property made available to us by the Whitsunday Regional Council, the council is not directly involved with the fundraising for the playground; we are a separate entity. In 2013 Parent Action Group grew to 15 members and became an incorporated association. We are committed to building an exciting new venue for our kids. The committee is formed exclusively of volunteers, and therefore, 100% of all fundraising dollars go directly toward the playground project.

Together with Council, our goal is to build a unique 2,000m2 playground located near Cannonvale foreshore reserve, off Coral Esplanade.  The playground will be built by volunteers and contractors from the community, using the volunteers as much as possible will mean the money raised can be used to buy the innovative and modern equipment we want. The majority of the fundraising started in April 2012, the total budget for the playground is $400,000.

STAGE 1 was completed early 2015 and included the earthworks, drainage and preparation of the site plus a 30ft double flying fox. This is the very first piece of equipment to go in and it looks amazing. We are planning a fantastic fort for STAGE 2 which we hope with the support of local businesses and the community we can complete in JULY 2015.

We need the assistance of major corporate sponsors to complete our funding needs and make this dream a reality.
